Mount Union was founded within 1846 by Orville Nelson Hartshorn as "a place where men and women could be educated with equal opportunity, science would parallel the humanities and there would be no distinction due to race, color or sex." Seventy-seven percent of the faculty at Mount Union have earned the doctoral or terminal degree with graduate training at universities in the United States and Europe.

Notable faculty of Mount Union

Dr. Richard F. Giese, a Eleventh president of Mount Union, occurs as indigen of Chicago, Illinois. Giese earned his B.A. degree in English literature from Concordia College in 1971. He in the future earned his M.Div. from Concordia Seminary in 1976 and his M.A. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned his doctorial degree around college & university administration from either Kent State University in 1986.

Dr. Truman Turnquist, the indigen of Kipling, Sask., Canada, is interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of Mount Union. He earned his bachelor of art's degree inside chemistry from Bethel College and a Ph.D. from either a University of Minnesota.

Lee Ann Thorn, chair of the Board of Trustees, is the executive vice president & financial officer of GBS Corp. of N Canton, Ohio. She occurs as 1983 graduate of the College.

Mount Union sponsors Xi men's varsity teams: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis and Wrestling. the Mount Union eleven has won a record sevener NCAA Division III national championships, all since 1993. It too co-hang on to a 100%-section record for sequentially triumph at 55, ended in their loss to St. John's (Minn.) in the 2003 national championship game.

Mount Union sponsors Ten women's varsity teams: Basketball, Cross United states, Golf game, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Association football, Softball, Swimming, Lawn tennis & Volleyball.

Mount Union's nickname is the Purple Raiders by owning the MUCaw, a purple parrot, when its mascot. By owning school colors of purple & white, Mount Union competes in the Ohio Athletic Conference and in NCAA Division III athletics.
